History of ABC
Atascadero Bible Church has a very rich history. The Cornerstone of our building reads "Social Hall of the Federated Church of Atascadero, CA, dedicated November 25, 1920," The building was built by E.G. Lewis, founder of the Colony of Atascadero.
The original intent of Mr. Lewis was that this church would serve as a place for all the churches to gather, as well as a community center. This building, along with its large swimming pool in the back, served many functions. The original Atascadero Elementary School used the church rooms for classes after W.W.II. During the War, the pool was used by U.S. Army to train service men to swim, and in addition, was used as the high school pool before their own was built.
As the community grew, the Federated Church was dissolved. A group of believers purchased the building in 1936 and renamed it "The church of the Living Word". The church was later renamed "Atascadero Memorial Church." In 1973, under the leadership of Pastor E.B. Claud, the name of the church was again changed to "Atascadero Bible Church"
In July of 1991, Atascadero Bible Church launched into a new building project to build a new sanctuary and office complex. In the fall of 1999, we began a new 12,000 sq.ft. Christian Education Complex, to meet the continued needs for more space. This building was opened and dedicated to the Lord on November 19th, 2000. God has blessed our church as we continue to grow and look to the future.
